My 65 Slant six is in a 49 Dodge truck. The 49's temp gauge is mechanical and the sending unit will not reach the front of the head. On the 65's block on the passenger side towards the rear is a brass plug, and when removed ,coolant comes out. 1.The temp sensor signals to the computer, but not the gauge. I don't know where it is on the V8, but on the I6 it's at the back of the engine under the intake manifold. It's a sensor with a single wire hooked to it. You can test the gauge by grounding the sending wire and looking for the gauge to go all the way to the hot side.
